Conference and Event Support Fund (FACE) Launched

Destination Sherbrooke’s team of Business and Sport Tourism delegates is now equipped with an additional tool to help attract conferences and events to Sherbrooke, the Conference and Event Support Fund (FACE).

In a context where many other cities are trying to carve out a place within an ever-tightening market, this financial support will allow Sherbrooke to keep its advance and as such remain part of a small group of leading medium-sized business destinations in Quebec.

“Conferences and events are an important part of the Sherbrooke economy. Whether we are talking about associative conferences and meetings, medium to large sport events or more scientific-type meetings, Sherbrooke is recognised for its infrastructure, its welcome and its quality of support services, but this is increasingly not enough. Other destinations have started to offer financial support of this kind, and it is clear that we need to take a first step in order to maintain our market share,” stated Lynn Blouin, Director for Promotion, Hosting, Business and Sport Tourism for Destination Sherbrooke.

This financial support stems from allocations voted upon annually within the context of the adoption of the City of Sherbrooke’s budget. It targets both conference and sport event organisers, and can reach a maximum of $10,000 in support.

The FACE includes two parts:

• Part 1 focuses on the organisation of a conference or event within the territory of the City of Sherbrooke AND which has not taken place in Sherbrooke within the past five years AND which will generate more than 200 overnight stays in hotels within the City of Sherbrooke.

• Part 2 focuses on the organisation of a conference or event within the territory of the City of Sherbrooke AND which will generate more than 800 overnight stays in hotels within the City of Sherbrooke.

In accordance with Destination Sherbrooke’s mission, the conferences and events receiving support will lead to important tourism dollars spent and economic spin-offs in the capital of the Eastern Townships.

“We are convinced that the fund will provide a fresh boost for the conference and event market in Sherbrooke. We’ve noted that organisers and promoters strongly support it and they are very excited about it,” stated Pierre Poulin, Sales and Marketing Manager for the Delta Sherbrooke.

The applications received will be evaluated on an ongoing basis.

Destination Sherbrooke is the organisation responsible for the promotion and sustainable development of recreational activities and tourism for the City of Sherbrooke. It helps contribute to the creation of favorable conditions for the development of a sector that generates almost $250 million in economic spin-offs and supports close to 5000 jobs in the Sherbrooke region.
