More than thirty tourism partners and representatives came together Friday at the Grand Marché-Sartigan on 1st Avenue in Saint-Georges to officially open a new Tourist Information Office for the Beauce, located downtown Saint-Georges.
Following the updating of tourist welcoming services faced by tourism companies in the Beauce-Sartigan sector since 2015, this new service is certainly welcomed. Over the past 3 years, in addition to digital information stations, tourist welcoming teams are in “mobile welcome” mode across the Beauce-Sartigan MRC. During the summer students move around with their backpack, their flag, tent and even their tourism truck (in 2017) to visit locations and events where there are potentially visitors. This efficient “on the ground” welcome service allows for less direct referencing for lodging establishments and reaches more residents than tourists. However, it is a positive result to improve the tourism culture in the region, but since it is not a core objective for tourism welcoming, we are taking steps to ensure quality welcoming for visitors. An amusing fact, according to mobile teams in 2017 and 2018, “certain residents are almost part of the team as they go to the same places as us, often talk to us and give information to visitors themselves and refer visitors to our mobile kiosk!”

It is clear that tourist welcoming does not only take place in fixed spaces. Information and welcoming also takes place in parks, restaurants, corner stores etc., and of course on the web. Marie-Émilie Slater, tourism development agent and coordinator of tourism welcoming locations in the territory, explains that following the 3 years of mobile tourism welcoming services, this did not provide sufficient referencing according to tourism companies. As such, she stated that they needed a fixed address to study the correlation between fixed welcoming locations and referencing performance. The modest Tourist Information Office located inside the Grand Marché Beauce-Sartigan is a year-long pilot project that the team at Destination Beauce is confident in. Its strength is welcoming tourists in a boutique selling local products – very trendy and often helps keep tourists in the region!
The office in St-Georges will open its doors starting June 22nd and will be open 7 days a week up to September 3rd. After that, a digital information panel and brochures will be available during the Grand Marché opening hours, but there will no longer be staff. The Tourist Information Office will have provincial tourism guides, information about the Chaudière-Appalaches region and of course specialises in the hidden gems that must be seen in the Beauce region. Come and see us!
Destination Beauce is a non-profit organisation with the mandate of structuring and developing the promotion and tourist welcoming for the Beauce region.
